EngineerEmbedded & ControlsECUControl Systems

About the Role

As an Embedded & Controls Engineer at Newlight, you will play a pivotal role in developing the intelligent control systems that enable our hydrogen-diesel hybrid propulsion technology. You'll work with cutting-edge ECU systems, real-time control algorithms, and embedded software to optimize hydrogen injection for maximum efficiency and performance.

This is a unique opportunity to join an innovative team that is revolutionizing sustainable shipping. You'll have significant ownership and influence over the technical direction of our control systems architecture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop advanced control algorithms for hydrogen injection systems in maritime diesel engines
  • Develop and program ECU (Engine Control Unit) software for real-time fuel optimization
  • Write low-level C code for bare-metal and RTOS-based embedded systems with focus on performance and reliability
  • Implement embedded software for microcontrollers and real-time operating systems (RTOS)
  • Integrate sensor systems and develop data acquisition protocols for engine monitoring
  • Conduct system testing, validation, and optimization in laboratory and field environments
  • Collaborate with mechanical and combustion engineers to optimize overall system performance
  • Develop safety protocols and fail-safe mechanisms for hydrogen injection systems

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Control Systems, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in embedded systems development and control systems engineering
  • Strong proficiency in low-level C programming for embedded systems (bare-metal and RTOS)
  • Expertise in microcontroller programming, interrupt handling, peripheral interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN), and hardware abstraction layers
  • Experience with memory management, DMA, timers, and real-time constraints in resource-constrained environments
  • Experience with ECU development, automotive/industrial control systems, or engine management systems
  • Knowledge of control theory, PID controllers, and adaptive control strategies
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (CAN, Modbus, Ethernet) for industrial systems
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with marine or heavy-duty diesel engines
  • Knowledge of hydrogen fuel systems, alternative fuels, or fuel injection technologies
  • Experience with debugging tools (JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) and low-level optimization techniques
  • Background in automotive, aerospace, or industrial automation industries
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards (ISO 26262, IEC 61508)

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and equity package
  • Opportunity to shape the technical direction of a groundbreaking technology
  • Work with a passionate team on meaningful environmental impact
  • Flexible work environment and professional development opportunities
