About the Position

Newlight is looking for an all-round electrical engineer to own and lead electrical systems development!

Own all electrical hardware systems for the hydrogen injection system on board customer demonstration vessel and at test cells in our office.

Design subsystem and system level architecture, integrate COTS and custom equipment in junction boxes, create safety and test processes, and maintain electrical ICD.

What You Will Do

  • Own all electrical hardware systems for the hydrogen injection system on board customer demonstration vessel and at test cells in our office
  • Design subsystem and system level architecture for electrical systems
  • Integrate COTS and custom equipment in junction boxes
  • Create safety and test processes, and maintain electrical ICD
  • Design and develop custom PCBs for valve drivers, power converters, sensor interfaces, hydrogen sensors, and control circuits
  • Create PCB schematics, select components, route multi-layer boards, and prepare for manufacturing (Gerber files, BOM, assembly drawings)
  • Source and maintain test equipment and lab consumables like power supplies, oscilloscopes, wires, crimpers, and passive components

About You

  • Passionate about boats, ships, engines, and climate change mitigation
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (or closely related field)
  • 3+ years of experience in marine, industrial, or other transportation applications, especially in small team environments

Required PCB Development Experience:

  • Schematic capture and PCB layout - Multi-layer board design (4+ layers), high-speed signal routing, impedance control
  • Component selection and sourcing - Power regulation, microcontrollers, sensors, MOSFETs, drivers, connectors, and passive components
  • Power electronics design - DC-DC converters, voltage regulators, motor drivers, relay circuits, current sensing
  • Signal conditioning and analog circuits - Op-amp circuits, filters, ADC/DAC interfacing, sensor signal processing
  • EMI/EMC design practices - Grounding, shielding, decoupling, filtering for harsh industrial/marine environments
  • PCB manufacturing and assembly - Gerber file generation, DFM/DFA reviews, working with PCB fab houses and assembly vendors
  • PCB bring-up, testing, and debugging - Using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers, and thermal imaging for validation
  • Communication interfaces - UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, RS-485, Modbus for industrial control systems

Additional Experience with Several of the Following:

  • Alternative energy systems like hydrogen, methanol, CNG, etc.
  • Hands-on engineering sizing, fabrication, installation, troubleshooting
  • Wire harness design and junction box integration
  • Working on site/in field away from comforts of an air conditioned lab

Required Tools & Software

  • PCB Design Software: Altium Designer, KiCAD, Eagle, or equivalent (schematic capture, PCB layout, library management)
  • Circuit Simulation: LTspice, PSPICE, or similar for analog circuit design and verification
  • Test Equipment: Oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, power supplies, function generators, signal generators
  • Documentation Tools: AutoCAD, Rapidharness, Visio, or similar for electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and system documentation
  • Soldering & Rework: Proficiency with soldering stations, hot air rework, SMD assembly and debugging

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)

  • Experience with PLC systems and ladder logic programming
  • Marine or maritime electrical systems experience
  • Familiarity with safety standards (IEC 61508, ISO 13849, UL) and certification processes
  • Experience with FPGA or embedded firmware development
  • Knowledge of hydrogen safety and hazardous area classifications (ATEX, IECEx)

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and equity package
  • Ownership of all electrical hardware systems from design to deployment
  • Work on cutting-edge hydrogen technology for maritime decarbonization
  • Hands-on work environment with vessel installations and test cell operations
  • Make a tangible impact on climate change mitigation
