About the Position

Own combustion physics and calibration for Newlight's hydrogen-diesel retrofit.

Define the combustion recipe (air–fuel, phasing, dilution), run tests, and work closely with Controls to deliver stable, low-emission engine maps for vessel deployment.

What You Will Do

  • Build hybrid strategy: H₂ substitution, diesel pilot timing, lambda/EGR control, rail pressures, split injections
  • Plan and execute dyno/on-vessel DoE; instrument for emissions and cylinder-pressure indicating
  • Analyze heat-release, CA50, RI/knock, IMEP/BSFC/BSNOx/PM, misfire/variability; convert insights to calibrations and ECU limits
  • Co-spec sensors/actuators and state machines with Control Engineering; validate via simulation/HIL and keep models correlated (GT-SUITE/CONVERGE/STAR-CCM+)
  • Write test plans, calibration notes, and release criteria; support FAT/HAT/SAT and commissioning with strong safety discipline

Must-Have Skills

  • MS in Mechanical/Aero (combustion/IC engines focus) or BS + equivalent experience
  • Hands-on engine testing and calibration; cylinder-pressure analysis and emissions testing
  • Strong grasp of combustion fundamentals (ignition delay, knock, mixing, emissions formation, aftertreatment interactions)
  • Ability to turn analysis into runnable maps/limits on real-time ECUs
  • Clear documentation and data-driven problem solving

Preferred Skills

  • Marine or heavy-duty engines; hydrogen/alt-fuel dual-fuel experience
  • Model-based development and HIL (GT-SUITE, CONVERGE, STAR-CCM+, MATLAB)
  • Functional safety and marine standards familiarity (ISO 26262 concepts; ABS/DNV/IGF/USCG awareness)

  • Analysis & Simulation: MATLAB/Python for data analysis and post-processing
  • Calibration Tools: INCA/ATI for ECU calibration and mapping
  • Communication & Logging: CAN/UDS/XCP logging and diagnostics
  • Simulation Software: GT-SUITE, CONVERGE, STAR-CCM+ for combustion modeling
  • CAD: Basic CAD for test hardware interfaces
